The tax class that blocks the country

The class struggle fiscal second Eugenio Scalfari

recession and economic crisis aw are therefore implore word of Bernanke and Trichet, that the two most powerful central bankers of the West. The rates of GDP and industrial production (excluding automobile) are revised upwards both in the U.S. than in Euroland. In short, the worst would pass even if they are the same as Bernanke and Trichet to lay hands on, yes, the worst is over, they say, but still we walk on terra incognita, the social crisis is still ahead of us, but the recovery is is not homogeneous, is also increased the difference in intent between the governments especially in Europe and each country goes its own way, so you can not relax our guard.

After all, just a fortnight ago and in public statements by Bernanke and Trichet had said exactly the opposite. Predicted slowdown in production, revise downwards the rates of GDP on both sides of the Atlantic, feared stagnation of investment and reducing consumption especially in sensitive sectors of construction, alarmed at the debt positions of many countries and the effects they might have on financial and monetary markets. The least we can say that these conflicting arguments of the two top central bankers is that their view of reality is somewhat confused and the arc of their divisions is very fluctuating. I do not know if you realize this, but their behavior is becoming grotesque, the barometer of an instrument which seems to have gone mad from which perhaps it is wiser to ignore.

Those who have no doubts whatsoever is made by the Minister of Economy. Interviewed by Republic declares without hesitation that we are out of the crisis. Have no problems, but the crisis is. The problems are to Tremonti for economic policy coordination among European governments. Europe is still an archipelago, but it's time to become a continental bloc led by a single brain, namely the European Council of Ministers (Ecofin) to the Commission Brussels is the executive body. The Ecofin will meet tomorrow and will launch this epochal transformation: the rise of European economic brain which will be responsible for protecting the stability already in place and start on a continental scale competitiveness policy, which will enable Europe to compete successfully with both America is with the emerging giants of Asia.

goes without saying that the canon of competitiveness lies mainly in the end of the class struggle between capital and labor into and to be carried out company by company, contract by contract. The final surprise in the interview of the Minister Massimo Giannini is the opening to all parties and all social forces Members, however, recalled that after the Berlusconi government will last at least until 2013 and probably more. Let's recap: Europe is now marching towards the accelerated economic and political unity, an Italy that, in spite of its huge public debt, and sound travels in a perfect stability of the locomotive pulling the German model for all, a tax reform in our country which focuses on families, work, business and move the collection from people to things. In the meantime, we must abolish all prohibitions and all the rules except those explicitly reconfirmed. So according to him, and so Tremonti Europe. However, many gaps remain in this landscape painting of pink many questions and even some Marchiano error to be corrected.

Getting started: Europe lives in a complex world and especially in a Western context where the U.S. play a decisive match. Apart from the roller coaster on which to continue to travel both Bernanke and Trichet, the data certainly is the enormous debt the U.S. government, the fiscal deficit continues to swell in the lake of liquidity that the Fed will have to increase to support the recovery and in external debt and equally large concern. Washington for now pulling ahead on this road in anticipation of the midterm elections next November, but soon will have to make choices. Rigor and return of the debt ratio acceptable decrease in the external deficit, weak dollar to discourage imports, or inflation. Inflation conscious, deliberate inflation and operated to reduce the weight of debt and devalue the claims.

These choices, whatever they will not save Europe which, in turn, will face American decisions in appropriate ways. Who will decide on European responses? The Ecofin answer Tremonti. Germany, responds to reality. Germany will decide, giving some compensation to France in terms of management positions in the Union. But if this were not enough it is very unlikely that the archipelago can be transformed into the desired European continental block. In reality Three Peak scheme still seems written on the water, waiting for any unknowns that do not depend from Europe let alone Italy.

on what is happening in our country the diagnosis of the Minister of Economy is to say the least part. There is a jobs crisis that involves mainly the young and insecure. There is a crisis in the South. There is a stagnation in consumption and investment. And there are no resources available. He spoke with clear responsibility Tommaso Padoa Schioppa 24 Ore in an interview last Friday, in which among other things, praised the rigor of Tremonti. The interviewer asked: "In Italy there are those who raised the tax cuts. is a recipe that possible? ". Answer: "When you make proposals to reduce the deficit rather than increase it, I'd like you to explain how to keep accounts in order. Otherwise the answer is "no." "It seems to feel Tremonti" says the interviewer. Padoa-Schioppa says, "Tremonti was aware from the outset that Italy had no room for maneuver. And this is a good thing. "

Former Economy Minister Prodi sees a continuity with the policy of his successor, based on a fact: Italy has no leeway. But it is an unchangeable fact of life? In a country that still ranks among the top ten richest countries in the world? What is the answer and there is a plausible answer? It is a workable recipe? Before addressing this issue, however, should still provide a picture of what is to happen in the coming weeks, even in the coming days. There are 200 000 temporary workers at the school by decision of the minister Gelmini will be left on his ass. There are 500 000 workers who will face a very complicated to solve employment problems. Finally, waiting for the appointment of the holder of the Ministry of Development after four months of emptiness, the timing of the tables of corporate crises that affect the fate of 14 000 workers are crowded. Among these Eutelia the case, the Ideal-Standard, the Fiat plant in Termini Imerese, the case of Oerlikon, Indesit, Burani, Merloni and many altri.Dal September 7 to 23 of these disputes will be decided in one way or another. This is the picture. Everything in order, minister Tremonti? Fruitful cooperation between labor and capital under the aegis of the eternal Berlusconi government?

The resources are there, you just have to want to find them. The first way forward in the fight against tax evasion that largely coincides with the market flooded. These first results when the tax was in the hands of Vincenzo Visco, now continues to give: in the current year we are in the order of nine billion recovery, not cheap but in this size is like a drop in the ocean because the recovery of evasion existing ago from new and additional counterface escape, so the stock has been subtracted from the tax authorities is more or less unchanged.

The second way forward is to recover resources in the fight against waste. Here there would be a lot of pulp, are unproductive uses a fair amount of public spending cuts and arranged in the Finance Acts 2009 and 2010 were those grounds. The method adopted, however, was quite unhappy. The cuts to the ministries were arranged in a linear fashion, so have been penalized in the same proportion is unproductive expenditure is indeed necessary expenses that should have been increased. As for the cuts in staff, the choice of squeezing public employees was justified by the fact that past performance salary increases were higher than those obtained by private employees. Grounds very difficult to prove and still hotly contested. All of these measures has not recovered much in terms of waste but lowering the overall level of spending has still further compressed domestic demand with visible effects on consumption. Other depressant effects come from cutting transfers to the municipalities and regions, whose impact on local taxes and service quality.

Finally, there is a third way to go to recover resources and transfer the tax burden from the wealthy and disadvantaged groups to bands from income to assets. In a country where inequalities are dramatically increased in recent decades, such an operation should be done but the political caste pretend it's impractical. We say that is not popular because it strikes at all times with the most powerful corporations, the clientele and a band of unscrupulous voters valuable to the current majority. The truth is that tax policy in place has connotations typically classist, it strikes at the bottom instead of the top and actually turned progressive taxation in a real regressive, with lots of greetings to the constitutional principle. Yet a change in the fiscal sense of a return to the principle of progressivity contribute greatly to the revival demand and growth. It would also effectively cut waste and increase competitiveness. But is not written in the tables of this government, so long as there are no substantial changes in the political class-finance and taxation will remain unchanged, with all due respect to those who argue that class struggle no longer exists.

Can Pokemon Be Migrated To Soul Silver

A story to read

delicious and useful review of Geoffrey ferragostana Fofi drive, with advice and overall interpretation of the Risorgimento. It is also useful to stimulate the connections between history (sociology) and literature.

The history of Italy unit is about to touch the 150 years of age, and they prepare ambiguous celebrations go hand in hand with fierce denigration. Today these are not, as in the past, the nostalgia of the Bourbons, but by the traditionalist Lombard-Venetian, not at all nostalgic for Franz Joseph but do not want to have more to do with "thieving Rome" and you dream alone, with many rich and slaves. In summer it is good use to read books that have not been able to read this year, because they are too heavy or because it was lost in the daily struggles. And if you read the most trendy romanzoni full of love exotic or frightening crimes, the less noble enterprise dedicated to recovery: the classics with which re-discuss or compare for the first time, to essays that demand a lot of attention, but preferably the former, because the rest is rest. Do not miss this rule, I am fine there.

Which is it the classic that I wanted to read or reread for the first time this August in semi-working? From fast and voracious reader, I am not just one, and if I wanted to enjoy that one did not know (The Old Curiosity Shop, Dickens, Bur edition of which has a wonderful foreword by Giorgio Manganelli, writer and unforgettable of great sharpness but also a rare thing, a great human sympathy) and I found unexpected quality of indirect or direct ancestor of the work Terry Gilliam and even Fellini, for the rest of the suggestions I have given "unit", and I wanted to review some basic Italian novels over the years of our country's history, before and after the Risorgimento. Not The Viceroy (Roberto De) and the old and young (Pirandello, less well known, and it is a shame because it explains perfectly the fall of the illusions of the post unity and mud in our country's history was quickly covered by an obscene leadership now even worse), because I know them very well, not the tales of Rod and those of De Amicis, but two novels, of very different value, which tells how it came to the Unity: One Hundred Years of Rovani (the years that be in Milan from 1750 to 1850: instructive and lively, but essentially minor), and especially the Confessions of an Italian Ippolito Nievo and touching beauty and thrilling love for an Italy to be built. Nievo died at sea in three decades just after attending out figures, and remains one of the most lovable, most eternally young in our literary history and civic life. His confessions are key to understanding why a book written from within an experience and guided by love, even an ideal (unfashionable word alas, in these bad years).
But coming closer to our year, I read three novels on the Risorgimento seen from the South, however, instructive for all, one of which, The Leopard (1958) by Tomasi di Lampedusa have never been enthusiastic, not least because in the years when I lived in Sicily came out and saw up close the living conditions of the feudal lords of the principles such as Tomasi. Of which, of course, he and his lovely wife did not know almost everything that he thought his keepers factors and to exploit them. I never liked the movie even the nobleman Visconti, though admirable for his paintings of the environment and the choreography as it was the novel in his description of fatalistic surrender to the "laws" of history.

The real novel of the Risorgimento in the South has always been for me Ms. Ava (1942) by Francesco Jovine, a forgotten masterpiece of our literature that says, simply, as the peasants lived for many things also applies to the Centre and North, so that everywhere along the long boots, peasants and proletarians were kept away from participation in the story, they were subject and sometimes victims). Since few people have read (Einaudi published it, the reissue Donzelli), try not to lose it, trust me! I'm re-reading the third novel in this day and is definitely "Bourbon: The legacy of the Prioress (1963) by Charles Alianello, best-selling forgotten (it was the Press, the publisher has reprinted a glorious Venosa, Osanna), but has much to teach, says the impetus with which the ferocity of the war between the Piedmontese army and bandits, the Northerners now ... What you learn is that in the Risorgimento good and the bad are equally divided the country, that there was a revolution, and that novels are often more of the essays in history, to understand where we come from.

Screw you!

Well come on, whereas this will be in by 2003 if not before and now has the color of hot chocolate, I think a good idea ...

Solution # 2: punch and tap the side hoping to turn it as much as enough to grab it then.

Nothing stops as before, plus I dug some nice grooves in the whole head ...

then I go to a mechanic not far from me, restores old bikes, they say "he knows a parcel."
- "Well, look, you drill the screw into the aluminum iron when it is not talked about, even putting it under the drill press if I were you I would try a new cover, breaking the old one and try to remove the screw using those 4 mm die you have earned by removing the cover ... "

COOOOOOOOOOSAAAA ?!?!!?
But we're crazy!? Destroy a good piece to gain 2 mm in a hypothetical future that could possibly help me pull out the screw !?
And if that does not run anyway?

Forgive me, I am young and inexperienced, but I prefer to try it my way.

Armed with my trusty drill and some drill I did the iron work
  • - Step 1: the tip smaller than I (1 mm?) hole by a fine, 7-8 mm deep
  • - Step 2: with the biggest tip that I start to eat the head of the screw
  • - Step 3: occhiometro says when I almost finished drilling the taper of the screw, mounting a bit as great as the core of the screw (not like the screw as the core!), and way down into the material .- Step 4: I begin to gloat when the head of the screw comes off clean and free of the cover.
  • - Step 5: After removing the lid still being careful not to drill the chips end up in the precious brake system.
  • - Step 6: drilling a free-hand iron screw without damaging the thread on which aluminum is screwed: priceless.

Newyork

There is an original way to tell a metropolis like New York? Maybe. Is it possible to do so through the images?. Of course, since this is one of the most photographed and filmed cities in the world. So what?. So we must invent and risk as it did in this gallery Marco D'Amico, thanks to new technologies New York has come with an iPhone. A degree in sociology and spent in the field of communications, Mark (born 1977) came to photography relatively late. But this may have helped in some way because his work (from the jazz world, the portrait) show great artistic maturity. We have also added the ability to measure and explore utitlizzando from time to time, old and new technologies. This is the appreciable rislutato. Italianità. The construction of the national character.

A book read.

INTRODUCTION Silvana Patriarca

'typically Italian. " In February 2003, the most important Italian newspapers devoted pages and pages to the death of Alberto Sordi, the popular actor to star in dozens of films of the Italian Republic. Almost all commentators were agreed that in his films Sordi had represented better than any other character of the Italians. For the Catholic newspaper Avvenire, was "the mirror" of Italy. The Corriere della Sera hailed him as "the hero of all our faults," while La Repubblica had embodied the 'art to be Italian "personifying" a mixture of defects "unequivocally Italic. The 'Unity' Deaf was a "great little Italian 'and the' Century of Italy" was a national symbol which for fifty years had given a "face to the vices and virtues of the Italians." Beyond this general agreement (with the exception of members of the Northern League, who did not like the Roman world of the Deaf) no doubt there were differences of emphasis, in addition to the ideological positions that reflect the regional base of each paper, but the importance of Deaf as an expression of "national character" was approved almost unanimously.

The fact that an actor is assigned such a role is perhaps not surprising, considering the importance of cinema in contemporary culture. In Italy the phenomenon is even more pronounced because in the period after 1945 the cinema became a nationalized function in an environment where, apart from the extreme right, nationalism did not have much political marketability. The film then became the privileged vehicle for the production of images of Italian style both at home and abroad, and the Italian comedies of the fifties and sixties, which was often the protagonist Sordi, became "the first generally capable of putting continuity with the public at large the problem national identity. " Can elicit more surprise that the role of national icon has been assigned to an actor who played negative characters regularly, and who has built his entire career impersonating dell'antieroe different versions, the young provincial indolent able to adapt to the opportunity with success in different political regimes, the philandering that eventually, reluctantly, must submit to the order of holy matrimony, and so on. What are the reasons? With this book, I will try to answer this question and make sense of this apparent paradox reconstructing the genealogy and history of the discourse of national character, a rhetoric that is since the dawn of contemporary and which resists the passage of time.

But what is national character? Although the concept in academic rightly lost its legitimacy, this concept is still alive in popular culture, where, among other things, gives rise to an infinite number of jokes on ethnic grounds, and in journalism where it is the structure a number of reports on foreign countries. The national character is not the same thing as national identity, although in common parlance the two terms are often confused. Both concepts are quite elusive and lends itself to multiple definitions and uses, but we can say that the national character tends to refer to the provisions of "objective", established (a set of particular moral and mental traits) of a population, while national identity, a term coined more recently, tends to indicate a more subjective perception and self-images, which may involve a sense of mission and exhibition in the world. You will need to return to talk about the meanings of these terms is often disputed, but for now suffice it to say that, in practice, both concepts operate more or less that containers of different stakeholders tend to fill a variety of contents. These contents are not chosen at random: the discussions on national identity and character national and the definition of two concepts occur in the context of discursive models that often have a long history and which individual partners are most often unaware. The burden of this model of discourse is particularly evident in Italy in the last twenty years after the fall of the old party system that had structured the life of the republic in the aftermath of fascism, but the problems the nation is back to dominate the public discourse .

Since the early nineties of the last century, the Italian interest in the issue of national identity, initially stimulated by the increasing visibility of the Northern League on the political scene and its virulent attacks on the unity of the nation, has been significant and continues unabated. The titles in the library in recent years clearly show the anxiety and worries about the fragility of national and buoyancy to the dangers of its disintegration: If we cease to be a nation, Italy goodbye? Unity and disunity from 1860 to today, Finis Italiae, The Death of the homeland, Italy without Italians, to name a few. Other titles are symptomatic of anxiety for the issue of modernity, or the lack of modernity, the country and the quality of its civic culture: Italy is a civilized country?, Le Italie parallel. Why Italy can not become a modern, civil identity of the Italians. And in newspapers and magazines these issues are boosted by titles such as Italians, people in masks, all scary and processed, the Italians? Anarchist sheep that do not form a nation, Italy is undone, but there are Italians, never will become a normal country?; What is Italy?.

As these examples show, the case of Deaf eloquently in recent years many citizens have questioned persistently about the meaning of being Italian. Although you may not even have the certainty of being a "real" nation, but many are convinced they have a national character, and the fact that this character does not make a good impression. In contrast to the positive image that other people often have of themselves (think about how they see the Americans - optimistic, forward-looking, concerned for the common good - or the British - loyal, reserved, respectful of the law) the idea that Italians have of themselves is by no means flattering to be part of any social group, describe themselves as a nation of cynics, regardless of extreme individualism of the public good, opportunist prone to cronyism, false if not all liars. According to Eugenio Scalfari, for several years and current editorial director of the "Republic," these traits are so ingrained as to constitute almost one ethnicity. Often, foreign commentators agree with this idea and talk, with or without irony, "Italian-style political" and the risk that it may infect the public life of the best performing countries.

Indeed, such considerations seem to be justified by several recent events. In the early nineties, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the investigation "Clean Hands" corruption revealed a very large sector of the ruling class and the large number of politicians and businessmen were indicted. Following this the country witnessed the collapse of the whole party system that had ruled since the end of World War II. Immediately after the collapse of this system the hope of positive change were dashed when the country became the scene of devastating political rise of media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, who had acquired immense power in the field of commercial television, thanks to connections with important political figures in the party system that had just collapsed. Of course, long before these recent developments in Italy was known as a country where political corruption was widespread and the law was poorly observed and not sufficiently enforced. All these phenomena raise questions rather than legitimate not only the quality of institutions but also on the attitudes of the population. However, such attitudes equate to a "national character" is something quite different. This requires a more critical look, in fact, is the fact that many Italians read these realities through the lens of the concept of national character, especially when you consider that Italy, unfortunately, is not the only country that is facing with political corruption or conduct that, from a civil point of view, leave much to be desired. In other words, if no one can deny the existence of certain traits in Italian society and culture, it is not clear that they should be called a "national character" (or national identity in Italy, as I said, the two terms are often interchangeable). And so we return to our initial question: What is the national character? And why so many Italians are convinced they have a national character that is flawed, and that its failures also explain most of the current political and social problems of the country? The thesis of this book is that part of the answer can be found in the study of the history of the discourse of national character, that speech should be understood as a set of ideas, themes, arguments and tropes of applicants, in the Italian culture for a long time.

Manfrotto 344b Review

Dad's jacket, and Deer Parri

still a cute and clever Fofi intervention, this time on April 25, a date that continues to inspire and (alas) to divide the Italians. It's hard not to fall into the rhetoric of the event commemorating the liberation and resistance, but Fofi succeeds masterfully, starting from an object of everyday life jacket Ferruccio Parri.

back, this time in paperback Einaudi, the story of my seven children told by others to Alcide Cervi, the old farmer who saw Emilia children slaughtered by the Republicans as anti-fascists, because opponents, because resistant. These memories have a unique history in some way "Soviet", inspired by some articles of the Young Communist journalist Italo Calvin, who had just written his memoirs in a partisan literary debut singular because in between reality and fairy tale, The Path to the Nest of Spiders.
Calvino visited more than once the home of the Bucks, where the old Alcide Genoeffa had taken with his wife, after the mourning, to drive a family of daughters and grandchildren of children or adolescents. On the history of the Bucks, crowned with medals, highlighted by the chairman Piero De Nicola and Calamandrei, the Communist Party decided to build a narrative model that Togliatti addressed along the lines of the party at that time: the recovery of a national tradition, a strong events that enhanced the resistance as the basis on which to build the new Italy. Even (or why) the story of the Bucks had a Catholic background and socialist, and peasants instead of working.
Luciano Casali said very well in the preface to the book as it is born, commissioned Renato Nicolai, a journalist from the Dark Shops, the party (and in fact overseen by the same Togliatti). The book "Daddy Deer" sold in a few years nearly a million copies, also because the party prepares its paperback edition to fifty pounds, the one who kept all their lives. In 1971 an unknown censor "cleaned up" badly text from references to Stalin and the ideology of the Cold War, but one that offers Casali is the original edition, which followed the logic of those times, is that a lot of Italians have read and which were moved, getting all in all a life lesson - that of the deer family overwhelmed by history and punished for his ideals - always clean and valid.
In recent years, in the wake of the great sage of Claudio Pavone on the Resistance as a civil war, so many wise and important studies have analyzed the war years, but just the second non-party fees historians, re-establishing the truth, avoiding the mitificazioni and misinformation come first by communists. And we know how much of this there is still a need, because the aura of "civil war" has always continued to weigh on this country and, though now dormant, may return to weigh. Having
age, it happened to me to cross the old Deer. I try to tell the time very much in the clearest way possible. I was nineteen years of age or make. It was 1956 (or 1955? I can not say with certainty), and the huge cinema Adriano in Rome is celebrating ten years of some great event of war. Outside there was a lot of police, because the resistance was not abundant in fashion and Scelba cops. Of those who were on stage Calamandrei remember perfectly, and Parry, sitting next to him, the old deer, seven medals in the chest.
At one point one of the front rows stood a young man - a fascist - Parri and threw a package or a can of paint, and is in full. In the general outcry, stayed with his eyes glued to Parri, and saw Alcide Cervi extracted from a pants pocket a handkerchief to those of one-time farming and clean methodically, affectionately Parri paint that had smeared his coat and hair. That gesture of brotherly or fatherly old against another, moved me to tears and never forgot it. (I do not know if there are photos of the scene, who deserved to be famous, but there were photographers in the room and certainly would be nice for someone to find each other.)
This story took me for a quick result, which I will not tell why it was this el'ammaestramento the core. What I mean, in fact, is that despite all the complicated, convoluted, tragic events of the years of resistance and those immediately following, the thousands of stories of forgetting or revenge, and in spite of internal divisions and manipulations historiography (the book most beautiful and clear up those years for me partisan friendship Giorgio Agosti and Dante Livio Bianco, Bollati & Hogarth Press, and on the literary Johnny the Partisan Fenoglio, Einaudi: three non-communist) resistance is the most worthy and of our glorious history of the twentieth century, and with that history must always be reckoned with, and always share it.

How To Make Hong Kong Style Chili

A draft response

I try to express my concern with regard to intervention Fofi below. It will not be easy, 'cause I have an ambivalent attitude to this article: it is a very clever article, which also shares its basic inspiration and the conclusion ("the Italian left has to think for themselves), but I think the dialogue (and critical) with a "philosophy of history" which does not coincide with America. It is part of a critical (matrix-Jewish aristocrat-European) as representatives of Americanism that sees Mann-Heidegger-Adorno, Baudrillard, Sontag (and others), that America and 'fundamentally the source of all (and everyone) the evils of modernity ': nihilism, the culture industry, the technology (such as neglect of) the Disneyfication of the story, neo-liberalism, etc.. etc.. It may 'well be that this philosophy of history has proved successful and as a global hegemon (the good - or bad - of the history and philosophy' that are not falsifiable in the Popperian sense: they are intuitions of the world, and as such fleeing from empirical testing). The fact is that it does not match, or do not run out of America. Just one example and out. See the average American only as a "consumer" bulimic and selfish, all intent on stuffing myself with burgers and advertising ', totally ignores the and that 'reality' and social history of a country that has always known (and knows) a practice of association and solidarity 'intense at all levels, from the beginning, as Tocqueville (in fact, that unlike all the intellectuals cited Signoroni above was basically an ethnographer) had caught. United States (especially in the Midwest), as noted by Robert Bellah, are one of the countries where the practice and the community movement and community has had an intense 'unprecedented in the Western world, marrying in a paradoxical individualism more 'anarchist and libertarian (that possession and consumption). This, in part, also recognizes Fofi, when he speaks of our "debt of gratitude to minorities Ethical Use. "The fact is that America is deep, popular, daily, stands out in this and much more from the cliche 'that European intellectuals generally attribute to it. It can' be caught by the look more 'modest' ethnographer that the ambitious of the great philosopher or intellectual, always at the bottom of the aristocratic and conservative. As he watched the late Pierre Bourdieu, "the general views are general visions.

Milena Velba After Training

Dialogue (imaginary) with Fofi

The following article Godfrey is Fofi, an intellectual who deserves esteem and respect. shareability In its acumen and substantial, but the article leaves me uneasy background. It repeats after all, the point of view of the mandarins of the European intelligentsia, who have lived more democracy on the books that actually practiced. Also, do not give up the comfort firmness of "bias" of historical analysis overall, just faded in the end. It could be taken as a starting point for a reflection on the reflection of European intellectuals around the American myth, the style of Pierre Bourdieu. But there is no room for that now. Happy reading .

The misunderstanding of the American myth

Goffredo Fofi, of Unity, April 11, 2010

When you say America means the United States for centuries, it means the United States of the North, and also If Mexico, Argentina, Brazil United States of America, speaking of Americans say the U.S. "U.S." seems more correct to say that "Americans". America is a huge continent divided into North, Central and South America, with North America (excluding Mexico) of the Protestant tradition and the Center and South of the Catholic tradition but still with a strong dominant mestizo, however, that in many countries has not loved at all, and does not love his Indians.
As it is, we know that the number one power in the Americas remains the U.S., we know that, even today and despite the competition before Japan and now China, the U.S. remains the greatest world power, especially after the collapse of the USSR (and its lifestyle, its ideology), and we know equally well that the United States to first have institutionalized and then exported and implemented in the world, raising a strong resistance only in the Islamic, recently a model of society and human behavior, habits common which is commonly called the "American way of life." Islamic fundamentalism is only understandable if you think of cultures that, despite all their limitations, they can not develop inside them if not referring to the American model, American blackmail.
In the seventies, after the failure of the anti-imperialist revolts generous in almost all the planet, including therefore Italy of students and workers, and the years of the first withdrawal of a generation to itself, licking the wounds of defeat and to marry or be subjected to the "culture of narcissism", in the film Over the years, Wim Wenders, a director since then too loved (and I was personally a big pain, weakened by growing irritation, follow the inexorable decline of that lewd and lately director) tells the story of two misfits "veterans" of those movements on the road, one of whom spoke a great truth "The Americans have colonized the unconscious." But it was not only unconscious, it was almost everything.
The Americans have imposed on the world maybe the world what he wanted: the idea of \u200b\u200ban easement by being comforted and distracted by the media, which, so obsessive and redundant, let us say disgustingly ubiquitous and totalitarian, have invaded the public as private, have done the American way of life a single thought acceptable to all. The individual disappears, also said that it is still only in the act of individual consumption. This model is entered into the unconscious of all, no one can be declared free. Even the Church fell kindly to terms with the capitalist model, which is good to see the more secular and even atheist in spite of all the frenzy of his fundamentalist sects and many of its leaders, after furious fighting communism and not enough against the fascist. He resisted any institution created by World War II, perhaps taking a pickaxe today by most American of Italian, dear Berlusconi. (But to be honest, we've had in recent decades perhaps, in Italy, a politician who resigned more than a national or European models and the most pro-American by Walter Veltroni?)
few years ago, in a polished speech, "said Susan Sontag that the U.S. had spread worldwide plague, and probably of the plague this world would be dead. Despite all the love and our debt of gratitude for so many minorities Use ethical, religious, social art, despite the hopes of democracy (the dream) John Dewey and Hannah Arendt, despite the Fed's ability to absorb and integrate the long run (but after many sorrows!), its ethnic minorities, if the target moves away and looks at long-range or long, it seems impossible not realize that the "American model" - and the banks and corporations and armies that have spread prosper - will remain an enemy or a friend of democracy. In place of the individual consumer, instead of thinking the binge media, instead of opening sympathetic selfishness and even autism, instead of free advertising.
With all due respect to Obama, start to think, for the Italian left can only mean to think independently and not "American."

thou wouldst ago the American ...

publishing the article by Marcello Cini on the Manifesto (19 / 2), which I think says intelligently Obama's recent decisions on nuclear energy. We have already heard some siren "progressive" (Chicco Testa, the Reformist) advantage - in bad faith - dell'imprimatur U.S. President to clear even the next nuclear power. No doubt about it: the great Renato Carosone, fifty years ago, had just seen ...

IMPOSSIBLE IN ITALY

Marcello Cini

US NUKE - The choice of the wrong of Obama to open two reactors is the U.S. strategy that already has nuclear

entrust the construction of nuclear power station that Berlusconi wants to make a few miles from home to entrepreneurs who have put the sand instead of cement in the student house of Aquila and in the hospital? Entrust the management of contracts to Bertolaso? Would you trust the expertise Impregilo which for years has filled the Campania ecoballe of black bin for an incinerator to burn them unable to? And you would be satisfied if the disposal of waste will occupy Friends of camorra?
are no provocative questions. Only reflect the harsh reality of established facts and official documents. And, then, why does not entrust Floris Pagnoncelli to conduct a survey on the opinion of the Italians with these questions?

a club against us?
This was my first reaction to the news that Obama announced the construction of two nuclear power plants to be implemented over the next seven to eight years breaking a moratorium of three decades in the energy policy of the United States. "For a long time - he said - it was believed that those who fight for the environment to be against nuclear energy but it is a contradiction: nuclear power is our only source of clean energy." There is no doubt that this decision will be used as a club over the heads of our opponents to the nuclear program recently approved by the Italian government. The first obvious reaction is therefore that I described earlier. None the less bitter on account of some other reasons why the Italian context differs substantially from those of the United States. In the light of this difference should be seen the choice of Obama.

A misleading
should first be noted, however, that Obama did not claim, as does the chorus of our nucleophiles, that the cost of nuclear kilowatt-hour will be lower than that of other sources, It is not a serious issue. Without going into details, just note that on the latter, both renewable and nonrenewable, still weighs the cost of a barrel of oil, which has gone in a year one hundred and fifty dollars to fifty, but may also go up if the owners of oil will decide to do so. While it is increasingly difficult and expensive to find new reserves, it is very likely to happen.
The price of oil affects all other either directly or indirectly, as well as its low price has dramatically reduced the investment in renewable energy by impeding the previous downward trend in costs, would boost his rising cost of other sources. Experience shows that in any case, the costs increase dramatically dedicated nuclear reactors during construction. Any comparison
today in favor of nuclear power is therefore misleading. Moreover, Obama's commitment to act for the construction of two new nuclear power stations with public funding means that the market alone is not considered cost effective to invest in this sector.
The choice of Obama is therefore a strategic choice that has the priority to maintain the technological leadership and the hegemonic position of the United States against the emerging globalized world.

more risks and fewer jobs to be done
The second consideration relates to the difference between the nature of nuclear power than solar sources, wind and other forms of saving. The nuclear source (which, remember, is not renewable because uranium is a scarce and insufficient to meet global demand massive) is located in large systems, very expensive and technologically complex, while plant sources are scattered, small and technologically simple, not to mention forms of energy saving, by definition, wherever located. In addition, these facilities do not present a particular risk, while nuclear reactors, even if they are protected by sophisticated security systems and most efficient in normal operating conditions, are potentially vulnerable to unpredictable acts of terrorism or earthquakes.
This different nature have substantially different effects. First of all employment. For the nuclear question, under construction, with a few thousand workers (the two reactors employ three thousand Americans) and during operation a few hundred (850 expected). Even if only a fraction compared to the many thousands of workers made by us on the pavement by vultures who bought the invisible computer companies (formerly Olivetti). The construction, operation and maintenance of power plants 'sweet' may instead require the growth of their distribution in the area and thus lower costs, up hundreds of thousands of skilled workers. It is obvious, moreover, that this growth would be accompanied by an indirect and direct development of the Italian economy, which, as is known, is based mainly on small and medium industries. The abysmal difference

last consideration: the abysmal difference between our country and those who developed the first nuclear weapons. It is not, of course, an original sin. Instead, it is recognized that the development of nuclear reactors is the result of decades of synergy between the military and civilian. This means that a development of this industry can not be invented from scratch. Italy is therefore ordered, if and when it may be necessary to do so, to buy reactors from those who have always made.
This is not true for the equipment industry for the production of renewable energy and energy conservation, we still have time to develop into serious competition with countries that have already embarked on this path, provided that this choice of energy policy is made immediately and with heavy investments in personnel and equipment needed.
conclude with a reminder of the harsh realities of our country, recalling that Article 640 of the Penal Code defines the crime of fraud with these words: "Anyone with artifice or deception causing someone in error, power of attorney to himself and to others an unfair advantage with another loss shall be punished ...». There comes to mind anyone?

POLICY OF ECONOMIC DISASTER

Gad Lerner On the site I found the translation of this article by Immanuel Wallerstein (pictured him beside his young master Fernand Braudel), about a year ago. I can still interesting, so I propose it here. Good reading.

Every day I read another economist, journalist or public official who opines on how best to achieve recovery of the economy in one country or another. It goes without saying that all contradict each other remedies. It seems to me that almost all these gurus are living in the world of fairies. Really seem to believe that their remedies work relatively quickly.
The fact is that the world is only the beginning of a depression that will last a long time 'and will become much worse now. The immediate problem for governments is how to recover, but how to survive the growing popular anger that all, without exception, are facing.
start with the economic realities of the present. Over the past 10-30 years in more or less everyone - governments, companies, individuals - have been living beyond their means, and they did borrowing. The world is drunk with inflated earnings and inflated consumption. The bubbles have burst. Now it exploded (or actually exploded several bubbles). It is became aware of the impossibility to continue on this road, and suddenly everyone is afraid of being left without real money - governments, businesses, individuals.
When fear takes over, people stop spending, or to provide. And when spending and loans decreased significantly, companies end or slow down production. Could close its doors entirely, or at least lay off employees. This is a vicious circle, since shut down or lay off leads to lower real demand and further due to reluctance to spend or lend. It is called depression and deflation.
For the moment the U.S. government, which is still able to borrow money and to print money, will put into service a bit 'of money again. This might work if the government put an enormous amount in circulation, and wisely. But in all likelihood will not do it wisely. And in all likelihood put into circulation the amount that might work would amount to little more than create a new bubble. And then the dollar could collapse very much faster than other currencies, lowering the final major support of the world economy.
Meanwhile, 90% in the bottom of the pyramid of the world population there are less and less money for the daily consumption of each type (and even 10% of the top things are going so well). People are getting nervous. Only last month we saw people on the streets to protest economic hardship in a growing number of countries - Greece, Russia, Latvia, Great Britain, France, Iceland, China, South Korea, Guadeloupe, Reunion, Madagascar, Mexico - and probably many others that have not been noticed by the world press. However to date have been relatively mild protests, but all governments have the nerves on edge.
what governments do when their primary concern is to address the turmoil inside? In fact they have two choices - shoot the demonstrators, or calm him down. Shoot only works up to a point. To begin with the same agents the police, because they are willing to do so must be paid well enough. And for the schemes is not so easy to succeed when there is a severe economic downturn. So
schemes begin with appeasing their populations. How? First of all, with protectionism. All have begun to complain to the protectionism of other countries. But all those who complain they're their own practice. It will do much more. Liberal economists tell us all again that protectionism worsened the overall economic situation. It is probably true, but politically it is completely irrelevant when there are people on the streets who wants to work - now! The
second way in which governments are willing, when there is something going through measures of social democratic welfare state. But do governments need money. And governments obtained the money from taxes. Liberal economists tell us all that raising taxes (all types) during a contraction of the economy worsens even the overall economic situation. It may be true, but in the short term this is also irrelevant. In fact, a decline in tax revenues collapse. The government can not even meet current expenditure, not to mention increases in expenditure. So in one way or another taxed. Or by printing money.
Finally, the third way in which willing, and with a healthy dose of populism. Over the past thirty years the gap between the real income of 1% on top of the pyramid and the bottom 20% has grown enormously, both within countries and worldwide. The gap is now reduced to the more "normal" that existed in 1970, which is still huge, but a little 'less shockingly large. Then you have governments who now speak of "income ceiling" for the bankers, like the United States and France. Or you can prosecute people for corruption, as in China.
It's a little 'how to be in the path of a tornado. Governments can fall suddenly worse. When this happens, they have only a few minutes to take refuge in the cellar. Then the tornado passes, and if one is still alive out to examine the damage. The damage will prove to be vast. Yes, you can rebuild. But then starts the real debate - how to rebuild, and how fairly they will share the benefits brought by the reconstruction.
How long will prevail this gloomy picture? Nobody knows or can not be sure, but probably will be for quite a few 'years. In the meantime, governments face elections, and voters will not be kind to those who are in charge. Governments protectionism and the welfare state serve as a social democrat cellar during a tornado. The quasi-nationalization of banks is another way to take refuge in the cellar.
What I think we need people and we must prepare ourselves is what we'll do once we emerged from the cellar. The fundamental question is how to rebuild. That will be the real political battle. The view will not be familiar. And all our past rhetoric is suspect. It is crucial to realize that rebuilding can take us in a much better world - but in a much worse. In any case it will be a very different world.
